Tonight the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series made a stop at Eldora race track. Fans and I alike have been waiting for this since they announced that they were going to run a NASCAR race on a dirt track. Tony Stewart has owned this race track for a few years now and has put on numerous charity events but tonight the race was the star of the show. The fireworks was just a prelude to what was about to happen.
While we didn’t get the amount of wrecks that fans thought would happen we did get a lot of good things out of this race.
#1 – Fan support on Social Media – Besides the Speed Channel deciding to tape delay of the heat races they fan support was all positive. This is something NASCAR has always had a problem with as fans tweet each other that “Their driver sucks” type stuff. Tonight there was none of that and since most of the cup drivers didn’t run this race they were all on Twitter interacting with the fans.
#2 Good Racing – Even the announcers had their hands full announcing the race as they had to look at trucks 3 and 4 wide all over the track. The “single file – follow me” racing wasn’t there.
Every lap there was something new to watch.
#3 Lack of Commercials – Sure we had some commercials happen but for the most part they were at times where fans could handle them. With no race off pit road and the race broken up into segments we had plenty of time for commercials.
#4 Trading Paint – Fans want to see some paint being traded and tonight that happened. There wasn’t even hard feelings after the race, it was just a product of the racing.
#5 Norm Benning – Everyone at the track and on social media rooting for Norm Benning to make the race. When he did you would swear he won at Daytona. His truck was banged up and 5 teams helped him get ready for the race.
There is no doubt in my mind that this will be an annual event. I expect to see some cup and Nationwide guys try this next year. You can tell on Twitter that most drivers were wondering why they weren’t there!
What was your favorite part of the race?
