Hello Nascar friends. Hope all had a wonderful weekend BEFORE another Sunday afternoon was ruined due to rain in another place. I dont know about you all, but I am really over the rain this season. It ruined my weekend at Lowe’s in May, it played a factor in the race two weeks ago and then again this weekend. What are the odds? Seems to me that this has been a very rain challenged season. Someone should invent track umbrellas that cover the entire track so the guys can race even when it rains. haha. That would be wild to see. And what an umbrella that would be dont you think?? Guiness book of World Records kind of stuff. See what happens when it rains??? haha.
Well the race got off without a hitch on Monday and unfortunately I was stuck at work. That’s probably a good thing considering that a late race crash took out Jeff Gordon and Jeff Burton with less than 30 laps to go. That wouldnt be such a bad thing normally but Jeff and Jeff both took a tremendous hit from the 77 car driven by Sam Hornish Jr. . It started when Kasey Kahne forced Hornish off the track and into the barrier causing him to ricochet back into traffic slamming into the cars of both Gordon and Burton. Just another reminder of how perilous this track can be when these guys are racing hard for position.
Gordon was definitely hurting and in a lot of pain after the accident aggravated an already inflamed injury to Jeff’s back. Jeff has undergone numerous MRI’s recently and underwent a procedure back in May that was designed to try and alleviate some of the pain in his lower back. Any ground that may have been gained in his fight with his back may have been taken away with the accident yesterday at Watkins Glen. Even Jeff Burton was feeling the impact after that wreck. Burton was heard to laugh and say he was too old for this and that thankfully everyone walked away from it with only some minor injuries. Hornish says he banged up his hand and knee and of course Jeff’s back once again is in the spotlight. Hope you are feeling better soon Jeff.
Well one driver who managed to stay above the fray and come home to victory lane for his 5th victory at this track was none other than Tony Stewart. I would have to say that after last season and all the speculation about whether or not Tony was doing the right thing by leaving Gibbs and making to move to owner/driver this season. Well I think it is safe to say that he definitely made the right decision. Stewart and team mate Ryan Newman are both having a good season, Ryan hasnt posted any “W”‘s as of yet, but I dont think they are too far off the radar. Tony has hit the mark with this his third victory of this his inaugural season as an owner and driver. Congratulations Tony Stewart for bringing that Old Spice car to victory lane once again.
Another driver who had a victory of sorts at Watkins Glen yesterday was Carl Edwards. Cousin Carl brought his car home for a third place victory yesterday. His best finish ever at a road course. Carl said he was disappointed that they didnt get to run on the rain soaked track on Sunday, something he apparantly was very much looking forward to doing. He says that when the track is slick from the rain and the weather outside is hot that it makes for ideal conditions for the 99 team. But as things turned out, he didnt need all that bad weather and rain slicked track to bring it home in the third position at the Glen. Congratulations to Edwards and his team for making it happen at Watkins Glen. This was his fourth consecutive top ten finish at the Glen, but his best finish ever at the Glen also.
Well not much change going on in the chase points race. The drivers seem to be keeping a tight reign on their positions within the top 12 and there is very little room for errors among these guys. Here is the points rundown after yesterday’s race at the Glen.
Tony Stewart 3188 points leader
Jimmy Johnson 2991 -197
Jeff Gordon 2989 -199
Kurt Busch 2751 -437
Denny Hamlin 2713 -475
Carl Edwards 2665 -523
Kasey Kahne 2642 -546
Juan P. Montoya 2631 -557
Ryan Newman 2627 -561
Mark Martin 2622 -566
Matt Kenseth 2564 -624
Greg Biffle 2563 -625
Well thats the rundown for this week. Hopefully this weekend we can have a non-rain delayed race and do this on Sunday like we are supposed to!! haha. Well I am definitely not holding my breathe on that one! Anyways here is hoping for better weather come Sunday and I will see you guys back here this weekend. Have a great week Nascar fans.
