It is not often that I post about an ARCA race but in a little under an hour Danica Patrick will be making her NASCAR debut. I have been watching all the blogs and the social media and I am amazed at the coverage.
When they first announced that Danica would be joining NASCAR I was surprised by the reaction of the fans I follow on Twitter and Facebook. I was expecting most of the female fans to be very supportive. I was totally dumbfounded by this reaction I was seeing. I thought they would welcome her to the sport that has long been considered a mans world. As it is coming closer to the race though, I am seeing more female fans wishing Danica luck in today’s race. I am glad to see this as I think it is good for the sport.
I think that Danica’s arrival to NASCAR will bring new interest in this sport and bring a bunch of new fans. As you all know I am in New York City and we don’t get much NASCAR coverage in the newspapers. We usually get a two paragraph article with the winner mentioned and who crashed and that’s about it. Bringing this sport more into the mainstream is a good thing that will bring in more fans.
I have heard all the criticism of Danica is just an average driver and how she only won one race. To this I say big deal, she is a racer and that is all that counts. She obviously can handle an Indy car so she showed that she can drive, all she needs is some seat time in these big heavy cars.
I also have no problem with her using her good looks to advance her career also. I see this as no different as those commercials with Kasey Kahne. You know the one where the women are dreaming about Kasey. I can’t even remember what the sponsor is for those commercials. #fail lol
It is not as much the amount of coverage it is the attitude of the people that are covering it that is amazing to me. Maybe they are just tired of hearing all this Danica Mania talk or what. They should be looking at the big picture to further the sport.
I am sure there are a few that don’t agree with me and I would love to hear from you, leave a comment.
