Well Nascar fans, December is upon us and Christmas isnt far away. I hope that everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving full of lots of turkey and loved ones and a safe trip traveling if you ventured out for the holiday.
This week starting December 1st, Jimmy Johnson will be the center of a five day celebration marking the end of the Nascar season. It’s the annual Champions Week celebration in New York City. This marks the 28th consecutive year that Nascar has crowned it’s series champion in the Big Apple. The December 5th awards ceremony will be held at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel as it has in past years as well.
Marcos Ambrose knows that he has a long way to go and a lot of learning to do in this upcoming season for Sprint Cup. Marcos finds himself racing this season coming up, a full time schedule driving the no. 47 Toyota for JTP Daughtery Racing. Their racing group has entered into a technical alliance with Michael Waltrip Racing. Their car will share sponsorship among four sponsors, Little Debbie, Kingsford, Clorox, and Bush’s Beans. Ambrose has said that the 11 races he was able to compete in this season at the cup level was a real eye opener for him. He has learned what it takes to survive out there on the track in a cup car for the length of the race. He said he has a greater appreciation for the drivers and the depth of talent displayed by those drivers.
Noticeably absent from the list of accomplishments in the 2008 season was a mark in the win column for Jeff Gordon. Sixth on the all time list of winners with 81 victories to his name, Gordon failed to make it a consecutive 15th season with a win this season. Gordon has won at least 2 races every season since 1994. Richard Petty faced the same delimma when in 1978 his 18 year winning streak was ended. His response was to win the championship the following year. Dale Earnhardt also had a 15 year winning streak that ended with a winless season in 1997. However Dale did go on to six more trips to victory lane including his much deserved Daytona 500 win. He also finished second in the points in 2000. Well whatever is to happen remains to be seen as Gordon also turned in a consistent season with 13 top five finishes.
On a side note, tickets are now available for the season opener, the Bud Shootout at Daytona International Speedway. The Shootout will be held on February 7th, 2009. The race is 75 laps or 187.5 miles. The winner this year was Dale Earnhardt Jr. I could go on all day with stories about all the stuff I have seen and done at Daytona over the years. The oldest ticket in my holder is for 1999. So you can see I have been attending races for almost ten years. I can tell you that with a grandstand ticket, kids 12 and under get in free with a paying adult. That’s usually what we do because I usually have a couple two or three kids with me.
Well that was really all I could find to talk to about. I’m assuming that because of the holiday, there wasnt much else going on this week across the sport. I imagine that it will possibly be that way later on in the month as it gets closer to the holidays. Anyways, I will be looking for anything else new that I can find to tell you about this week coming up. So until then I hope everyone has a great week.
See you later Nascar fans. Have a great evening and until Wednesday, keep on racing!
