Hello Nascar fans. Hope you are all having a great week. If the last two weeks has been any indication, the Roush drivers might be the ones to watch this weekend. Don’t count out Hendricks just yet. Jeff Gordon came on strong last week and this could be the race to break his winless streak from last season. Well get out the blinders because we are in Vegas this week baby!
The Las Vegas Motor Speedway was constructed in 1996. It is located in Las Vegas and is considered to be part of Clark County. The track is a 1.5 mile D shaped oval. There is 2o degree banking in the turns and 9 degree banking in both the frontstretch and backstretch. The frontstretch is 2275 feet long and the backstretch is considerably smaller at 1572 feet. It has a seating capacity of 142,000 people. The track record for fastest lap is held by Kasey Kahne since 2007. The inaugural Vegas 400 race was on March 1st, 1998 and was won by Mark Martin. The track is a part of a multi track facility that spans some 1200 plus acres and has tracks for drag racing and dirt bike racing as well as the superspeedway track. There is also some really small .375 oval track there as well. The Las Vegas Speedway is owned by Speedway Motorsports and is part of a family of speedways that also includes Daytona. It is sometimes called “The Diamond of the Desert”. That is really about all I could find on Vegas this week. That’s kind of disappointing.
Well onto other news this week. There have been some fines issued this week against some of the Nationwide crew chiefs. The crew members in question are Brad Hicks the crew chief for Danny O’Quinn and Corrie Scott crew chief for Andy Ponstein. They are each being fined 2000 dollars for violating three sections of the Nascar regulations concerning actions detrimental to stock car racing, improper equipment, and a jacking bolt that needs to be made of solid steel. All violations were found during pre race inspections for Fontana. Interesting start to the Nationwide season. Let’s hope that trend does not continue.
Well as I mentioned before, this could be another winning weekend for Roush. With Matt Kenseth riding the momentum of the last two weeks and Carl Edwards poised to strike this season, it could be their weekend once again. On the other hand, I also said dont count out the Hendricks boys just yet either. Gordon made a strong showing last weekend finishing among the top five and Jimmy Johnson has won 3 of the last six races at Vegas. Any guess who won the other three? That’s right fans, Roush drivers! Edwards won last year and Kenseth won in 2003 and 2004. So I think it would be safe to say that it will be a 50-50 split between the two this weekend. This could be an interesting weekend to be a Sprint cup driver if you dont drive for Roush or Hendricks what are your chances for pulling into victory lane on Sunday? Not very good I would imagine but there are several other drivers poised and ready to make a stand on Sunday too. This will all be very interesting to watch this weekend. I will be looking forward to watching how it all plays out.
Well that is just about it for now fans. I will be back Sunday with the post race recap. Until then have a great weekend Nascar fans.
