Race For The Chase Pressure

by Vinny on September 17, 2008

With the Nascar Sprint Cup series coming to an end there is lots of added pressure on drivers in the race for the chase. Although the drivers are the best of the class there is pressure on them to win from their team and their owners and even the sponsors.

The only driver not feeling all the pressure is Tony Stewart as he will not be racing for his Home Depot #20 team after this year. That is ok though because I am sure Tony puts enough pressure on himself anyway. After having a lousy race in New Hampshire the pressure has been added on Kyle Busch. Being young it will be fun to see how the added pressure affects him. I am sure he will be fine in the long run.

Jimmie Johnson has pressure since he is the defending champion, that comes as a surprise to no one. Speaking of the Hendricks Motorsports teams Dale Earnhardt JR is probably just glad to be in the chase as he had missed it last year. Just goes to show you that if you run steady all year long and have good cars you can make the chase. Jeff Gordon is also a prime example of this. With Carl Edwards and Kyle Busch winning most of the races the Hendricks team made it into the chase by scoring top 10s the rest of the year.

Speaking of Carl Edwards who is losing his sponsor Office Depot to Tony Stewart’s new race team he has the added pressure since he won so many races during the year and needs to see if he can also do it during the chase.

Now it is on to Dover.

Racing at Richmond

by Vinny on September 7, 2008

It looks like the sky is clear and the track should be drying out just in time to get racing in what is the last race to the chase. With most of the drivers locked in once they start the race will be for the last spot getting into the chase. I am sure there will be a lot of female race fans pulling for Casey Kahne as he is sitting just outside the spot to qualify.

It is rare that we get to see both the Sprint and Nationwide cars race on the same day but I guess that is the way Mother Nature wanted it to be. I think we will see a full action-packed race since none of the top drivers have to worry about making it into the chase.

Since rain also canceled qualifying the drivers will line up based on their points. Kyle Busch will not have to make a run from the back like he did last week since he will be sitting on the pole. The start will be smooth unless one of the drivers trying to get into the chase back in the 12th-15th spot drives overaggressive and we have a wreck. I am sure they will talk about that to each other before the race starts.

A few of my buddies are making their way down to the track from New York City so hopefully we will have some pictures to post. If you ever want to share some pics you can do that on our forum.

As for how I think today will finish up, I am thinking there will be a driver that we are not expecting to get a win. Maybe a Michael Waltrip? Just a feeling I have, maybe Joey Logano will get a win in his first Sprint Cup race.
